Obama jobs recovery well underway

Posted by grahamfirchlis on February 13, 2010

A fact plainly in evidence, to anyone willing to look at the data.

It seems that everyone, Right or Left, is critical of Obama’s programs to reverse the massive jobs losses that resulted from the past 30 years of specious economic policy, most of it driven by Republicans. But the evidence is now clear that Obama’s policies are working, and the regressive Republican pattern has been reversed. It will take some time to gain full reversal, no set of policies can overcome three decades of institutionalized economic mismanagement in just a year, but we are well on the way and for that Obama and other Democratic leaders deserve substantial credit and support. Obama exceeds Reagan, gets GW Bush a job

Posted by grahamfirchlis on February 9, 2010

A moment I’ve been dreading. George brought his ne’re-do-well son around this morning and asked me to find the kid a job. Not the political one who lives in Florida. The one who hangs around here all the time looking shiftless. This so-called kid is already almost 40 and has never had a real job.
— Ronald Reagan, Diaries, May 17, 1986

Digby says this isn’t the right time for snark, but I disagree. Every time a prominent Republican sticks their head up is the right time for snark as well as cynicism and censure and condemnation, especially when the Republican is a thief, a traitor, a mass murderer and an alcoholic cokehead fool. Sarah Palin the gift that keeps on giving

Posted by grahamfirchlis on February 9, 2010

In their unending effort to support barrel-bottom scrapings, Fox “News” has hired Sarah Palin to provide “commentary” and “analysis” of something, sometimes, but not regularly but kind of more or less when she feels like it and stuff. Palin was a significant contribution to McCain’s electoral failure. Trotting her out to spew gibberish is a huge benefit to the Democrats as well as to Liberals, because next to her anyone seems reasonable and rational. Read the rest of this entry »

Sweet Potato Pie

Posted by grahamfirchlis on February 9, 2010

Surrogate parental figures can have an important positive influence in our lives. As a child, my best friend’s maternal grandparents were a strong presence for me. Both of them were born and raised and lived most of their lives in a very small Mississippi town on the banks of the great river itself until they moved to California in their old age. Granddad taught me how to fish and with his voice like a gravel truck on a washboard road how to sing bass, and by his example any number of important parts of what it means to be a man. Granny taught me many things about living in harmony, among them the fine art of cooking for others. From her recipes I still make a great number, including Sweet Potato Pie. George W. Bush is the Most Influential Person of the Decade

Posted by grahamfirchlis on February 9, 2010

When the history of the past decade is written, one person will stand out from all others as the Most Influential. More than any other individual, George Walker Bush, 43rd President of the United States, through his actions and inactions, had the most significant effect on the people of America and the world. All, of course, in a very bad way. [Updated] Read the rest of this entry »

New Year’s Day in California, 2010

Posted by grahamfirchlis on February 9, 2010

California is going to hell in a hand-basket, except for the weather. With the reins to that bit still firmly in Mother Nature’s hands, we continue to canter through heaven. Read the rest of this entry »

Once in a New Year’s Eve Blue Moon

Posted by grahamfirchlis on February 9, 2010

As rare astronomical-slash-calendrical occurrences go, this evening’s full moon is fairly up there. The last time a blue moon happened on December 31 was in 1990, a night of which I have no memory whatsoever, and the next one will not happen until 2028. Don’t expect to remember much about that one either. Read the rest of this entry »
